DOENÇA PERIODONTAL EM CÃES E SUA ASSOCIAÇÃO COM ENFERMIDADES SISTÊMICAS

Abstract

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition with high prevalence in dogs, characterized by the progressive destruction of the supporting dental tissues, including the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Although its initial manifestations are restricted to the oral cavity, periodontitis has the potential to trigger significant systemic alterations, affecting organs such as the heart, kidneys, and liver. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms include transient bacteremia, the release of inflammatory mediators, and the formation of circulating immune complexes, which contribute to the development of systemic dysfunctions. Therefore, this study aims to analyze, through a literature review, the etiological, pathophysiological, progressive, and systemic aspects of periodontal disease in dogs, with emphasis on cardiovascular, renal, and hepatic alterations. The importance of an integrated approach between veterinary dentistry and preventive medicine is highlighted in promoting animal health and welfare.
